Integral Voodoo
Voodoo is a 5000-year-old spiritual tradition working with the Orisa, Lwa and other diaspora spirits. Integral Voodoo integrates one of the world’s oldest living shamanic traditions with modern topologies of the Sacred. The term Voodoo has been chosen for its association with non-western-rationalist nonsense as well as for the deliberate ‘shadowing’ of the great mystery by our culture both in the Integral Movement and the larger culture as a whole. (Take, for example, the diminutive power of ‘Voodoo Economics’ as a phrase implying a non-rational, sympathetic, magical thinking as public policy.) Integral Voodoo draws from but is not part of any dogmatic, orthodox, or faith-based tradition. It also is influenced by Zen, modern psychology, Taoism and the ever-increasing influence of Integral Theory with an emphasis on a way of working in the here and now. It is no coincidence that William Gibson chose the Lwa as a way of representing the technocratic energies of our emergent culture in his groundbreaking cyberpunk trilogy. These energies, or spirits, have evolved with us, surviving the extreme oppression of slavery and the diaspora dislocation from Africa. When properly done in a supportive and aware environment, the traditional experience of trance, or ‘incorporation’ of these energies, has profound implications for ‘the Self’ created by our technocratic modernity.
